volver
pedro almodóvar, 2006.
i am so in love with penelope cruz and almodóvar,
i felt this film from beginning to end,
i didn't look away even when i wanted to - if you
haven't seen it, see it.
off to colorado tomorrow morning,
the plan is to convince jackie we need an almodóvar
marathon, she is studying in spain next semester so
i shouldn't have to work too hard.
cassie is another story.
god i am in love with run on sentences right now.
happy early thanksgiving!

kingdom of god within us.
driving down to carmel today, we always tote too much stuff:
i heard this read this morning, i thought it was lovely:
Wild Geese
Mary Oliver
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

un homme et une femme (a man and a woman)
director Claude Lelouch, 1966
interesting film, funny little tune, lots of diaphanous metaphor, anouk aimée is alluring at best and saccharine at worst. won some awards back in its day. first time i've seen the whole thing, not just pieces, i seem to have gained attention span this year. worth watching.

saturday: cross the bay bridge and pick up jackie in haight, cross the golden gate to marin county, park somewhere close to muir woods (monument?), hike four miles through gold and green light to muir beach, too lazy and sunkissed to walk back so we hitch a ride from a pleasant family headed to florida, explore muir woods and hug 600 year old trees, back over the golden gate to haight for a toothbrush, back over the bay bridge to oakland,
by 9:00pm we are snuggled in bed watching pan's labyrinth and eating hawaiian bread.
hope everyone is well!

À bout de souffle
or breathless, director jean-luc godard, 1960.
we watched it in school, but now nouvelle vague seems newer than then. plus young jean seberg charms me, and i needed to see something more existential than me right now. but alas, at the end of the night, in godard's words, you can't kiss a movie. tomorrow i will seek the company of others, but for tonight it's tea and writing and le français.
